Sometimes you stumble across a sound that pushes the boundaries of what you thought you could create within the balance of noise and music. The Gonemage project caught my attention for exactly this reason, and I was super eager to join in on the collaboration for the newest album Handheld Demise. I’m a fan of anything that explores aesthetics and concepts, and with the strange retro gaming black metal nightmare world of this collection, I really experienced and opportunity to grow as an artist working on these recordings.

In the dark

Gary’s concept for Handheld Demise is nightmares, real ones collected from friends and strangers.
Embodying one of the 40+ Nightmare Sprite voices in the songs, I tried to honor that mindset going into the recordings. Recording the vocal lines in complete darkness, covering the screen of my computer, I didn’t press save until I truly had the feeling down, regardless of the accuracy of the sound. Being a classical singer, this raw emotional approach was refreshing!

Freeform arrangement

For the outro of track 13, “From Walls to Woods”, I had the honor and joy of arranging and creating a freeform choir part based off of the lyrics sent to me.
I approached it like a Gregorian type chant, going in without notating any music down like I usually do. I stayed true to the rhythm and expression naturally occurring in the lyrics, improvising and inching my way towards the final arrangement.
Stretching the full span of my clean voice range, I tried to emulate the rich, colorful and dissonant soundscape found on the rest of the tracks on this strange and exciting album.

My voice is in the best company with this massive cast of guest artists:
